The feisty Knights will host the inconsistent Bulldogs in the first of the Friday games.

Newcastle bounced back from the flogging they received at the hands of the Panthers to push the premiers all-the-way last week, eventually going down 19-18.

Canterbury overcome a week of adversity to score a stunning 10-7 win over the Broncos in atrocious conditions at ANZ Stadium which led to coach Des Hasler signing a two-year contract extension.

NEWCASTLE are already a much improved version of their 2016 selves.

Last season they ranked last in points scored and points conceded and although the defence is still an issue, at least Nathan Brown’s side are heading in the right direction in putting points on the board.

In 2016 they scored just 305 points in 28 games but in five games this season they have 92 points and are averaging 18.4 points per game.

Although winning just one of their opening five games, three of their four losses have been by single figures which suggests the Knights won’t be an easy proposition for any side.

The Bulldogs rallied behind their coach and pulled off one of the upsets of the season last week.

Trailing 7-0 on a wet and windy night in Sydney, CANTERBURY produced two second-half tries to snatch the win away from Brisbane and relieve the pressure on Des Hasler.

Importantly, they did it without the services of half Moses Mbye who was ably replaced by Matt Frawley.

Although no one can ever doubt the toughness of any Bulldogs outfit, the big concern remains scoring points. It won’t be every week that they can score 10 points and get away with a win.

The Bulldogs are looking to be the first of either side to win four straight matches in this fixture this century.

Canterbury has won three straight against Newcastle, however, it hasn’t been plain sailing in any of those fixtures despite the Knights being on a downward slop during this period.

The average winning margin for the dogs in their three wins has been just 6.66 points. Although it’s tight, maybe consider the Line for the Knights which stands at +6.5.

Canterbury will have their tails up following their win against the Broncos last week.

That confidence will need to radiate down through the team because they need to start clicking when it comes to their attack. Will the points start coming now that Mbye returns to the line-up?

Against Newcastle, who are one of the poorest at defending, we are likely to see some points for the Bulldogs but you would have to take some juicy odds about them to score 20 points or more.

The home side always seems to lift for this fixture so it could pay to follow the Knights in this one. The best guide though could be the Total Match Points with the Under 40.5 @ $1.90 with Sportsbet looking the goods.
