New coach Ivan Cleary will have a baptism of fire this weekend with his Tigers heading to Townsville.

Cleary was announced as Jason Taylor’s predecessor this week but has taken over a side that is coming off four straight defeats, the latest of those a 28-6 result against the Dragons last Sunday afternoon.

They face a Cowboys outfit that has won four of their opening five games of the season and are aiming for a hat-trick of wins following wins against the Gold Coast and Souths in the past fortnight.

Cleary certainly has a big job to turn around the misfiring Tigers.

With uncertainty surrounding their coach finally over, there is still plenty of anxiety around the club concerning the ‘Big Four’ and where their futures lay.

This has to have played some part in their dismal form from Round 2 onwards which sees them rank last in the NRL for attack (12.4ppg) and defence (30ppg). Their average margin of defeat in the past month has been 26 points.

What is most concerning is their lack of points. They were lucky to score six against the Dragons last week and they’ve only been averaging seven points per game during their four-game skid.

The Cowboys keep rumbling along but they are picking up injuries along the way.

Co-captain Matt Scott is out for the season and now they have lost hooker Jake Granville due to a broken leg. That means coach Paul Green has had to reshuffle his forwards.

Historically the Tigers have won slightly more games than the Cowboys (17 to 15), however, eight of the past 12 have gone to the Queenslanders.

Although the Tigers did win their previous match which was at Leichhardt Oval, they haven’t beaten the Cowboys in Townsville since 2011 and they’ve dropped three straight since.

The winning margin for the Cowboys in each of the three recent wins at the venue over the Tigers have been by big margins at an average of 33 points. A Cowboys win between 31-40 points could be value here at $7.50 @ Sportsbet.

Whichever way you look at it the Cowboys looks close to a good thing.

They have a strong recent record against the Tigers and their home wins percentage is one of the best in the competition. Only strong teams in form beat the Cowboys in Townsville and the Tigers aren’t in either category.

You can expect to see some bounce back from the Tigers especially now that Cleary has been named as coach, however, we don’t think it will be enough for them to get the two points.

North Queensland will be the punters’ pal this weekend especially with multis!

KYLE FELDT – is yet to score in five games this season so is well overdue!
