PENRITH PANTHERS vs CANTERBURY BULLDOGS – Thursday 7.50pm, Pepper Stadium

My Panthers got the job done against the Titans last week, however, it came at a price, as they will come into this game against the Dogs minus Matt Moylan. Thankfully, the bloke coming into the side, Tyrone May, goes alright.

Regardless of the loss of Moylan, I think the Panthers will prove too good for the Bulldogs. The dogs finally get their captain, James Graham, back on deck, but it will take much more than his presence to reverse their recent performances. Weren’t they simply dreadful against Brisbane last week!

At least Canterbury fans have got their way with Mbye moving to hooker, Frawley to half and Lichaa back to the bench. It’s a positive shift in my eyes as well. However, things may seem a bit disjointed for a week or two before each player settles into their new role.

Quite simply, the Bulldogs will have to be at their best here to beat the Panthers – and that just doesn’t seem all that likely. Let’s take Penrith 1-12, however, I want to jump on Marcelo Montoya for first tryscorer, he’s a great young player and he scored first last week for the Bulldogs.

Outright Match Winner:

PANTHERS

PANTHERS 1-12

MARCELO MONTOYA

NZ WARRIORS vs CRONULLA SHARKS - Friday night 6pm, Mt. Smart Stadium

The Warriors have a ton of players out coming into this one, not least their best player, Shaun Johnson.

The Sharks have their own issues to contend with. The loss of James Maloney is massive, It will leave Chad Townsend to call the shots out there.

In saying that, this looks like a classic game for the Sharks to grind out and win. I don’t expect it to be a pretty win, but I do expect it to be a 1-12 win to the Sharks

I’m expecting a big performance from Andrew Fifita. Ever since Origin 1 he’s been a bit down on form, it’s about time he fired up again with the finals just around the corner. For that reason let’s play for some value and put him in as our first tryscorer selection.

PARRAMATTA EELS vs BRISBANE BRONCOS - Friday 7.50pm, ANZ Stadium

Parramatta have been playing OK over the past couple of months, however, they did struggle  to put the Tigers away last week, which isn’t a great sign! There’s no doubt the Broncos will prove a very tough assignment for them this week and the loss of Clint Gutherson is massive. He’s been brilliant this season and there will be a big void to fill without him there.

In terms of the Broncos – I’ve probably underestimated them a bit this year. I still don’t think they’re good enough to win the comp, but they keep on winning! And boy were they clinical last week against the Dogs! They’re also starting to get their guns back on the field – Milford’s been back a couple of weeks now and Boyd is also there. They should be able to account for the understrength Eels

I’m happy to take the Broncos 13+, I also think Milford is getting back to his best so let’s jump on him for first tryscorer.

BRONCOS 13+

NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS vs ST GEORGE DRAGONS - Saturday 3.00pm, McDonald Jones Stadium

Dragons fans had plenty to cheer about last week and there will be renewed confidence among supporters of a finals berth this year and possibly something more…

For the Knights it was the same old story. They were in the contest with the Roosters until the last 20 minutes when things did blow out a bit. They just don’t have a winning instinct at all. It’s honestly hard to watch some of their games.

Like many teams, the Dragons have a fantastic record against the Knights in recent times, winning their past 5 encounters. I expect that to continue here and wouldn’t hesitate getting on the in-form Dragons at 13+. I’ll also go with the electric Matt Dufty for first tryscorer. I saw this kid progress through the U/20s and he is a serious talent. He’s displaced Josh Dugan from fullback, and I think rightfully so!

Outright Match Winner:

DRAGONS

DRAGONS 13+

SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS vs CANBERRA RAIDERS - Saturday 5.30pm, ANZ Stadium

This is my upset pick of the week. I think the Rabbitohs have it in them at great odds to knock off the Raiders. A lot will depend on whether Sam Burgess plays, if he doesn’t, I’m a bit cold on them, but he’s been named in the team so I think we need to take that at face value.

I really like the way Maguire has reshuffled this Rabbitohs lineup. Sure, It’s taken him a while but I think he’s got there! Johnston at fullback, Cody Walker at five eighth, Sutton at the backrow, Damien Cook the hooker – it just looks nice!

The Raiders, meanwhile, continue to disappoint. They’ve lost 8 of their past 11 and look a shadow of the team they were this time last year. I know the Bunnies aren’t going well themselves but I have to take them at the juicy odds on offer!

Let’s go with the Rabbitohs 1-12 as I can’t see them giving the Raiders a hiding. For first tryscorer I’ve got to side with Alex Johnston again, he’s the leading tryscorer in the comp, and he’s there for a reason.

Outright Match Winner:

RABBITOHS

Half / Full Double

RABBITOHS 1-12

SYDNEY ROOSTERS vs NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS – Saturday 7.30pm, Allianz Stadium

This shapes as an interesting game. I keep waiting for the Cowboys to drop off without Thurston but they refuse to do so! Players like Morgan and Granville have really lifted dramatically over the past month.

In saying that, I’m tipping the Roosters here, even though they’re still a little bit understrength. They’re the kind of team that beats the teams they should and I see the Cowboys as a team they should beat.

I do expect the Cowboys to cause them some early troubles so I really like the look of the Cowboys / Roosters HT-FT double at great odds.

To back that pick up lets get on Jake Granville for first tryscorer. He’s always close to the ball, and I really like the energy he’s been playing with of late, he just might catch some big Roosters forwards off guard!

Outright Match Winner:

ROOSTERS

Margin Betting

COWBOYS / ROOSTERS

JAKE GRANVILLE

MELBOURNE STORM vs MANLY SEA EAGLES – Sunday 2.00pm, AAMI Park

Look, it’s hard to find any decent reason to not tip the Storm here. The Sea Eagles were awful last week, and something tells me they may have peaked on their run in 2017. They do get Apisai Koroisau and Blake Green back this week which is a big plus, however, I just think the Storm will be too good for them at home.

The one niggling doubt in my mind is if Cameron Smith doesn’t line up. He’s been named in the team but it wouldn’t shock if he was a late withdrawal. His absence would change the complexion of this one immeasurably!

However, assuming Smith plays, I’m happy to take the Storm 1-12. TO add a bit of value to the mix I think the Manly – Storm HT / FT double is well worth a play. Finally, for first tryscorer let’s throw in Tom Trbojevic. He is one of my favourite players right now. Go you good thing!

GOLD COAST TITANS vs WESTS TIGERS – Sunday 4.00pm, Cbus Super Stadium

Anything could happen in this one. The Tigers are in a rut but are actually playing OK. They’re sort of like a better version of Newcastle in my opinion.

The question is what’s at stake here? The Tigers are playing not to run last and the Titans probably still give themselves a chance of making the semis. All in all, I think the Titans have more to play for…

If you go back about a month, the Titans beat Wests at Campbelltown. Jarryd Hayne fired that day and the Gold Coast ran out as 12 point winners. It’s hard to see the Tigers turning the tables up in Queensland. One thing in their favour is that Konrad Hurrell won’t be playing on this occasion. He bagged 2 tries the last time they met and was quite unstoppable!

I’m not confident with this one but I have to side with the Titans 1-12. In saying that, I think the value could lie with the Tigers with the +9.5 start.

For first tryscorer, David Nofoaluma’s name is jumping out at me, not sure why, but he definitely knows his way to the line!

Outright Match Winner:

TITANS

TITANS 1-12
