Manly Sea Eagles 2019 NRL Season Preview & Analysis
The Sea Eagles have the pieces, but can they turn it into winning footy?
Manly Sea Eagles
Finished in 2018: 15th (7 wins, 17 losses)
Key ins: Kane Elgey & Brendan Elliot (Titans), Corey Waddell (Panthers), Reuben Garrick (Dragons)
Key outs: Aku Uate (Huddersfield), Shaun Lane (Eels), Tom Wright (Rugby Union), Brian Kelly (Titans), Lewis Brown & Jonathan Wright (Retired)
Coach: Des Hasler
Captain(s): Daly Cherry-Evans
Summary: If you look at the Sea Eagles on paper, they boast some of the most talented players in the competition. The brothers Trbojevic, Cherry Evans, Marty Tapau, and favourite son of the club Des Hasler all return to try and build off a lacklustre 2018 campaign. Although depth may prove to be an issue, if all are healthy on the Northern Beaches expect Manly to upset a few teams. Smart recruiting will help as well, as Elgey can try to slot into the Blake Green role, helping Cherry-Evans steer the ship, allowing Manly’s captain to look to exploit opposing defences. Ultimately, Manly need to put the off-field distractions that have plagued the club in recent years behind them if they want to get back to becoming true contenders.
Key stat: The Sea Eagles ranked #4 in tackle breaks and #5 in offloads in 2018.
