St George Illawarra Dragons 2019 NRL Season Preview & Analysis
The Dragons will be looking to make the most of Widdop’s final year in the Red V.
St George Illawarra Dragons
Finished in 2018: 7th (15 wins, 9 losses)
Key ins: Korbin Sims & Jonus Pearson (Broncos), Lachlan Maranta (Rugby Union), Corey Norman (Eels)
Key outs: Leeson Ah Mau & Patrick Herbert (Warriors), Nene Macdonald (Cowboys), Reuben Garrick (Sea Eagles), Hame Sele (Panthers), Kurt Mann (Knights), Jason Nightingale (Retired)
Coach: Paul McGregor
Captain(s): Gareth Widdop
Summary: The team dubbed the March premiers have struggled for consistency over the last couple of seasons, unceremoniously falling apart at season’s end. Dragon’s coach Paul McGregor will be wary of that fact and will be aiming to ensure Widdop’s final season in the Red V isn’t wasted. The Dragons ranked highly in offensive statistics last season, ranking 1st in tackle breaks and 4th in offloads. They will be hoping the acquisitions of Sims, Norman, Maranta and Pearson will help maintain that output as powerful winger Nene Macdonald and crafty veteran Jason Nightingale have departed. The Dragons can’t rely on Widdop for all their offensive productivity. That type of one-dimensional footy won’t see them contending. Corey Norman, Cam McInnes and Ben Hunt will need to fire offensively for the Dragons to surprise people this season.
Key stat: The Dragons ranked #4 in offloads and #1 in tackle breaks in 2018.
