State Of Origin Game 1 Man of the Match tips

Who will stand tall when it matters?

Wed, 6 Jun, 1:00 AM

NSW Blues v QLD Maroons

Wednesday 7:50pm

The common theme around this year’s Origin series has been the changing of the guard. Brad Fittler has ushered in a new era for the Blues by focusing on in-form players handed jerseys to 11 debutants. Whilst representative retirements and injury has forced Kevin Walter’s to usher in some players who have been earmarked for some time.

All this has meant the Man of the Match betting market is as open as it’s been in recent times. Previously if you were backing Queensland you were a good chance with Cameron Smith who won it seven times in his career or Johnathon Thurston who won it five times. It seemed when they weren’t winning it was Cooper Cronk or Billy Slater doing a cameo. But in Origin 3 last year we believe we saw a sign of things to come as Cameron Munster ($13*) took out the award on debut.

If Queensland are to win tonight then Munster will play a big part in it. His explosive running game is something to behold and by being a constant threat he opens up opportunities for his outside backs. Nothing seems to faze him and given Ben Hunt’s injury effected preparation he will be in the mind-set that he needs to stand up and deliver when it counts.

If the Blues are to come up trumps we also believe it’s the man in the number six jumper who will stand tall. James Maloney ($9*) will feel added responsibility being one of the most senior members of the Blues team and it appears the Blues have a licence to thrill given their dynamic centre pairing of Latrell Mitchell and James Roberts. Maloney’s ‘show and go’ has already brought him rewards on the Origin stage and the threat outside him may make defenders overcommit.
