NSW Blues v QLD Maroons – Man of the Match preview

Wednesday 7:50pm

Suncorp Stadium

Having a punt on the Man of the Match in State Of Origin is one of the most popular bet types on the match itself.

Outside of Head-to-Head and First Try Scorer betting, the Man of the Match is the next most popular bet type and offers up tremendous value if you can find yourself the winner – but that is where the difficulty, and value, lays.

An interesting stat to come of this bet type is that in the past five winners, which date back to Game I in 2017, four of them are forwards. Andrew Fifita, Josh Jackson and Cameron Smith took out honours in each of the respective matches last year while NSW skipper Boyd Cordner took out the gong in Game II a few weeks ago. The odd one out during this sequence is James Tedesco (Game I, 2018).

Of course most of the time the Man of the Match will come from the winning team but that is not always the case. Jackson’s honour came after the Blues had lost Game II at ANZ Stadium.

From a punting perspective though there is a relatively low occurrence of this happening and since we think the Blues will be winning then we are scouring their list of players to take out the award on Wednesday night.

Damien Cook ($8) is at the top of the market along with Queensland’s Billy Slater and was terribly unlucky not to have won the award in Game I. The Souths hooker set up a try and constantly caused the Maroons defence problems with his speed out of the ruck. Look for him to do similar again here and at $8 we definitely think he is worth a punt on.

Another forward we think is worth having a few dollars on in this respect is Tyson Frizell. He runs hard and plays hard and is definitely built for Origin. Watch for him to cause havoc on middle to outer edges with his powerful hit ups. Definitely worth something at $17.

If you think there’s an upset in the making then Slater ($8) is definitely worth a bet for the home side. The Queenslanders will be pumped to send the champion fullback out of the Origin arena on a high, especially as he will lead them out in his final game.

Best Bet: Damien Cook (Win) @ $8

Value Bet: Tyson Frizell @ $17
