ON FIREMelbourne Victory have appeared the team most likely to test Sydney FC in the league this season. Sitting a clear second on the table, they are seven points adrift of the leaders but still have a game in hand to play. They have discovered their scoring touch in recent weeks, outscoring the opposition a whopping 13-4 in their last four games!
CHAMPS TO CHUMPSOh how the mighty have fallen! Adelaide secured the double last season in spectacular style but this season has paled in comparison. Just one win from the opening 13 games sees them rooted to the bottom of the table on seven points. What’s worse is that they boast the worst attack (0.75 goals per game) and one of the poorest defences in the league (1.76 gpg).
THE HISTORYAdelaide haven’t had the best time of it against Melbourne of late, winning just once in their past six games. Earlier this season the teams met at this venue where Melbourne secured a 2-1 win – their third against United since November 2014.
HOW IT PANS OUTWhichever way you look at it there is likely to be only one result. Adelaide have tried hard in recent weeks but have simply fallen short against the better teams in the competition. Four weeks ago they lost 4-0 to Brisbane and then two weeks later it was the same score, this time at home, to Sydney FC. The one saving grace for Adelaide could be that Melbourne are nowhere near as lethal on the road as they are at home. Just nine of their 30 goals have been in away fixtures at an average of just 1.8 per game.
