Can Melbourne City pick up some much needed momentum heading into the finals?
The FFA Cup champions have struggled ever since picking up their first piece of silverware earlier in the season and head into this fixture off back-to-back defeats.
Adelaide are out of the finals race but are dead set on making life difficult for every other team still in contention. Enjoying a good run of form lately they are taking a 1-1 draw with Perth into this match.
MELBOURNE CITY didn’t handle their road trip to Sydney all that well in the past fortnight, losing by a combined total of 6-1.
Conceding three goals against the Wanderers back in Round 24, league leaders Sydney FC then put the cleaners through Michael Valkanis’ side at Allianz Stadium last week by winning 3-nil.
Defence has been an issue for them in the past few months and they need to fix that quickly as they have their eyes on securing the League / FFA Cup double.
ALL TOO LATE
Adelaide is enjoying its best run of form for the entire season, however, it’s too little too late.
The defending champions are 11 points out of the top six but to show you how far they’ve come in the past month, they have picked up eight of a possible 12 points giving them 22 in total for the season.
Punters should take note that their form has been good against quality opposition as well, sharing the points with the Wanderers and Perth while taking all three against Brisbane and Central Coast. Three of those teams, bar the latter, will be playing finals in a few weeks time.
Their win against the Mariners a fortnight ago lifted them off the bottom of the table above Central Coast and was their first success on the road in 2016/17.
The scoreline 2-1 has been the result the past two times these teams have met.
This will be the third time they face each other this season and the previous time they played, back in January, it was Adelaide scoring a shock win. Go back to the end of October last year it was Melbourne City who took the points at this very ground.
City hitman Bruno Fornaroli is a logical choice in the First To Score For Their Team market. He is paying $2.80 to do so with Sportsbet and having scored five times in the past six games against Adelaide, you should back him in this market at the very least.
In this same market we have also found some value in Adelaide defender Dylan McGowan @ $34 with Sportsbet – he has scored twice in the past three fixtures between these sides.
If you were to purely judge this game on the respective teams’ position on the table then the money would be on Melbourne City.
The big disclaimer here is that City has struggled for consistency for the past four months and a big reason for that are injuries and suspensions.
They have been really solid at home this season (6W, 3D, 3L) and that alone could be the deciding factor here because Adelaide has only picked up seven points on the road during the current campaign.
Even though Adelaide are playing some of their best football, Perth are going to be our selection. Any team with The Reds are playing well at the moment and will give City a run for their money, however, we are realists and are betting on City to help build our betting bank for the weekend.
