This derby battle will go a long way to determining who gets the wooden spoon at the end of the season.
Both these sides had finals ambitions midway through the season but their form in the back end of the campaign has seen them drop by the wayside.
Central Coast will go into this having been thumped 5-1 by the Roar in Brisbane while Newcastle were easily handled 3-nil by the Wanderers at home.
CENTRAL COAST have played a bit better than their recent form suggests.
Although they have conceded 12 goals in their past four games, you need to drill down into each performance to see that they actually haven’t been going too bad.
Go back three games ago for instance where Sydney FC barely scraped past them 1-0 and even last week, Central Coast were leading 1-0 and then hit the post against Brisbane. At 2-0, it could have been a totally different result, but soon after that happened Jamie Maclaren exploded and the Roar put five on them in next to no time.
It has been a familiar tale for the Mariners throughout the season in that the effort is there but it hasn’t necessarily translated into results.
JETS COME CRASHING DOWN
NEWCASTLE has been a feisty opponent for most of the season but they have really fallen off a cliff in recent weeks.
Mark Jones’ side have conceded 15 goals in the past four games and scored just one.
The Jets were looking good for an unlikely finals appearance just a few months ago after picking up points in seven of eight matches, however, they haven’t had a win since January and go into this off the back of five losses in their past six games.
It’s been a long time since the Mariners won an F3 Derby.
Newcastle hasn’t lost in the last seven clashes with their arch-rivals, however, five of those games have ended in draws.
The two most recent wins for the Jets have both come at Central Coast Stadium in February and April last year.
We are with the Mariners ($2.63 @ $bet365) here.
They are playing slightly better than the Jets so that is the only thing we can go on. Both sides go into this off the back of four straight defeats and don’t want the wooden spoon, so it should result in a fantastic contest.
Newcastle has really dropped their bundle of late and the league’s worst away team (2W, 1D, 9L) will be up against it to take all three points against the Mariners.
