BERT VAN MARWIJK has been appointed Head Coach of the Socceroos.
Australia had been without a coach for a few months following the resignation of Ange Postecoglu, who successfully guided the Socceroos through the qualifying playoffs to get to a fourth successive World Cup.
Securing Van Marwijk is a coup for Football Federation Australia as the Dutch coach has a proven pedigree on the world stage.
The 65-year-old was Head Coach of the Netherlands in 2010 during their run all the way to the World Cup Final, which ultimately saw them fall in extra time against Spain. He has since helped guide Saudi Arabia to automatic qualification to this year’s World Cup but sensationally quit shortly afterwards, having failed to reach an agreement regarding a new contract. At club level, Van Marwijk won the UEFA Cup in 2002 with Feyenoord so his credentials in pressure cooker situations cannot be questioned.
Australia are considered one of the outsiders heading into the World Cup this year with punters able to secure at least $201 about their chances across the marketplace.
Key market: The $4 @ TAB about Australia to get out of the Group Stage in Russia looks appealing now considering they will have Van Marwijk at the helm.
