Australia has plenty of work to do if they want to avoid being embarrassed twice in five days when they play Colombia at Craven Cottage on Wednesday morning.
Naturally there was always going to be a transition from the Postecoglu era but coach Bert Van Marwijk appears to have his work cut out for him if the side is to avoid another shellacking after losing to Norway 4-1 on the weekend.
The negative style of play and tactics didn’t appear to suit many of the squad, who admittedly, haven’t had a great deal of time under Van Marwijk, and many will be asking why Tim Cahill wasn’t given some game time either.
One of the positives was that Van Marwijk gave starting opportunities to the likes of international rookies Dimi Petratos and Andrew Nabbout, while Milos Degenek and Aziaz Behich were part of the starting 11 also. These players need experience and blooding them now isn’t a bad thing, however, with limited time available prior to Russia Van Marwijk cannot afford to give them too much time.
Can we expect some of the more familiar faces starting against the Colombians who are ranked 13th in the world? They warmed up for this game against Australia with a 3-2 win over France just hours after the Socceroos lost to Norway. Even more impressive was the fact they came back after going down 2-nil early.
Colombia has a number of dangermen throughout the park including Bayern Munich’s James Rodriguez and striker Radamel Falcao who are likely to give the Socceroos plenty of headaches in defence.
Key market: Colombia is $1.40 with TAB to win Wednesday’s match and going off what we saw from both sides just a few days ago, it looks pretty good value.
