Melbourne Victory v Adelaide United
This is a match worthy of finals football as traditional rivals Victory and United square off in the second Elimination Final of the weekend.
The history between these sides is long and goes back to the 6-nil drubbing Melbourne gave Adelaide in the 2007 Grand Final – the second decider of the A-league era. They then repeated the dose two years later by a 1-nil margin.
In six finals clashes between the sides, Adelaide is yet to get the better of Melbourne Victory.
The teams have played four times this year with Adelaide winning the first one 3-nil (FFA Cup) before a 2-2 draw come about in October. Early December saw Adelaide secure a 2-1 away win before Melbourne were 3-nil winners the last time they met on February 24.
Melbourne Victory had Asian Champions League commitments on Wednesday night and although it was at home, a four-day back up for an eliminator is hardly the ideal preparation for Kevin Muscat’s side. They lost their last regular season game against Sydney FC 1-nil.
Adelaide, on the other hand, scored a sixth away win of the season with a thrilling 3-2 win over Western Sydney to knock the Wanderers out of the top six. The Reds scored more wins on the road in 2017/18 than home wins, and that fact alone makes them worth having a crack at here especially as the home side will have a short turnaround from Asian Champions League.
