A-League Best Bets & Multi - Round 10
Two of the hottest teams in the league will kick us off for Round 10
Melbourne Victory vs. Wellington Phoenix – Friday 7:50pm – AAMI Park
At the start of the season, no one would’ve predicted that this match would be one of the games of the round heading into Week 10 of the competition.
Melbourne Victory is flying at the moment and are unbeaten in seven matches, however, Wellington comes into this in pretty hot form themselves with a hat-trick of wins giving the Kiwis plenty of confidence.
And confidence is what they are going to need coming up against Victory, which is a club they have traditionally struggled against. Since their inception into the A-league, Wellington has lost 19 times to the Victory – the equal most against any club they’ve faced with Sydney FC being the other.
Melbourne Victory has won four of the past six clashes between the sides with the Phoenix taking the other two.
Both teams are flying and although Draws are rare in this fixture, we think that two of the comp’s hottest teams will neutralise each other and take a share of the points.
Sydney FC vs. Brisbane Roar – Saturday 7:50pm – Jubilee Stadium
Brisbane Roar face two-time Premiers Plate winners Sydney FC off the back of four straight losses and during this span, they’ve conceded 12 goals while scoring just four.
They did look pretty good in defeat against Melbourne Victory a fortnight ago but put in an absolute stinker against the Phoenix across the ditch last week, losing 4-1. Facing a Sky Blues outfit they’ve only beaten once in their past six encounters it really is difficult to see them scoring the upset.
Sydney FC seems to found have their feet in recent weeks with the two straight wins and three in their past five games. The two losses they suffered during this span are against teams that have franked the form – Wellington and Melbourne Victory.
Bank on Steve Corica’s side to get the three points.
Newcastle Jets vs. Adelaide United – Sunday 7:00pm – McDonald Jones Stadium
This is one of the hardest games of the round to pick.
Both teams are struggling for consistency but the advantage could be with the Jets who are enjoying a few more days rest than the visitors who had to go around on Boxing Day.
Newcastle has traded wins and losses in their past five games but comes into this off a confidence boosting 2-1 win over the Mariners in the F3 Derby.
In recent times they have struggled against Adelaide, losing two straight and four of six.
Adelaide is now winless in their past three games and drew 2-2 with the Wanderers on Wednesday night. They won’t fear travelling, though, with two of their three road games resulting in wins.
One stat that could persuade us to have a bet. Having a bet on both sides, or either, to win 2-0 could be the way to go as this scoreline has come up three times for both the Jets and United in their past six matches.
Central Coast Mariners vs. Perth Glory – Monday 7:00pm – Central Coast Stadium
When will the pain end for the Mariners?
It’s been nearly a year since they’ve had a win and we think the wait will stretch into 2019 as they face the league leaders in Perth Glory.
Mike Mulvey’s side continues to set unwanted records by suffering the start to an A-league season of any side in the competition’s history. They have just two points from nine matches and have the worst attack and defence of any team.
Perth looks to be the real deal this season but did suffer their first loss of the campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Sydney FC at home last week. Tony Popovic’s side head to the Central Coast without star player Chris Ikonomidis who is on Socceroos duty, however, that shouldn’t be enough to derail the Glory.
We think Perth will notch their fourth win in five clashes against the Mariners. For some value, go for the Over 3.5 Goals too as this fixture has produced an average of 4.5 goals the past two times they’ve played.
Western Sydney Wanderers vs. Melbourne City – Tuesday 7:50pm – ANZ Stadium
The new year promises to bring in plenty of goals when these sides do battle on January 1.
An average of three goals has been scored between these sides in their past three clashes with the Wanderers winning two of those and City taking the other one.
City has started to find their feet in the past couple of weeks and will be confident of a good showing here having scored a last-minute equaliser to thwart Melbourne Victory’s winning run the other day in a 1-1 draw.
The Wanderers bagged two goals against Adelaide but had to settle for a share of the points on Boxing Day.
So while we predict that the Over 2.5 Goals is a good bet, if you want to have a crack in the Result market, then City is our team. They appear a little stronger of the two sides and have won on the road twice already this season.
