Can the USA retain their status as world champions?

Can the USA win their second World Cup on the spin? Standing in their way are the reigning European champions: The Netherlands.

The Dutch have certainly had to earn their place in the final; hard-fought victories against Japan (who won the 2011 World Cup), Italy and Sweden—the latter being settled in extra-time by a Jackie Groenen stroke—is evidence enough of their dogged determination (and talent of course), and if they go down, they’ll go down fighting.

Ultimately, it’s hard to look past the holders. Not only does the USA have a better squad, but the Dutch have an extra 30 minutes of football in their legs and played the day after Sunday’s opponents.

Though the USA has scored within the first 15 minutes of every match this tournament, the Dutch have proven their mettle with clean sheets against Italy and Sweden in the past two rounds.

USA v Holland

If you want value, backing a draw at half-time and a USA win at full-time looks the way to go. The USA have conceded goals in their last three matches, so even if they score one of their trademark early goals, don’t be surprised if the Netherlands fire back with interest within the first 45.

$4.20* looks a great price.

Tip: Draw/USA - Half Time/Full Time

Alex Morgan is tied as top tournament goalscorer with England’s Ellen White on six goals (who still has a chance to sneak ahead of Morgan in the third place play-off), and she’s undoubtedly her side’s talisman up top.

Morgan’s goal against England was her first since that demolition of Thailand in the first group game, but the calm poacher’s header against the Lionesses showed just the sort of player she is; if you’re banging on the door, she’s often the one to make the breakthrough.

Tip: Alex Morgan Anytime Goal Scorer
