Rafael Nadal headlines a big third day of the Australian Open with the former tournament winner taking on Argentinian challenger Leonardo Mayer. In other standout matches Jo-Wilfried Tsonga takes on Denis Shapovalov, and Nick Kyrgios battles Victor Troicki.

Nadal vs. Mayer

Although Mayer took a set off Nadal the last time this pairing met, expectations are Rafa will wrap this up in straight sets. Entering this on the back of a 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 demolition of Victor Estrella Burgos in the 1st round, Nadal displayed the type of form that saw him reach the final of this tournament last year. For his part, Mayer also enters this match after a straight sets victory and has previously been ranked inside the Top 25, however, it’s hard to see him troubling the 16-time grand slam winner.

Key Stat: In their four meetings, Nadal has only ever dropped one set.

Our tip: Nadal to win with the first set to be under 8.5 games.

Jo Wilfried-Tsonga v Denis Shapovalov

Jo Wilfried Tsonga starts firm favourite, but there are plenty tipping the upset here. Denis Shapovalov has won the only meeting between the pair and what’s more he managed to do it in without dropping a set at the US Open. Furthermore, Tsonga’s record on this surface was 7-6 last year compared to Shapovalov’s 7-3. For the record, both men come into this game with straight sets victories to their name in the opening round.

Key Stat: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga crashed out of two grand slams last year before the third round.

Our tip: Shapovalov to win.

Kyrgios vs. Troicki

In-form and firing, Nick Krygios is expected to account for his Serbian challenger without too many problems. These players have met once previously with the Aussie dropping just three games on his way to a straight sets victory. Troicki will also have a fatigue factor to deal with here given he took five sets to overcome Australian wildcard Alex Bolt in the opening round of the tournament. Krygios on the other hand won through in straight sets against Brazilian Rogerio Dutra Silva.

Key Stat: Krygios has won his last five matches.

Our tip: Krygios to win, and the match to not feature a tie-break.
