Australian Open Best Bets - Day 13: Women's Final
The Australian Open will crown a new Women’s champion as Naomi Osaka battles Petra Kvitova for the title and World No. 1 ranking.
(8) Petra Kvitova vs. (4) Naomi Osaka
What a time for Petra Kvitova and Naomi Osaka’s first ever meeting - the Australian Open Final. Kvitova is a two-time Wimbledon champion and Osaka is the reigning Grand Slam holder after her triumph at last year’s US Open so we know both women have what it takes on the biggest stage and who handles it better on Saturday night will go a long way to decide who wins the match.
Osaka fought off a tenacious Karolina Pliskova in three sets to book her spot in the final while Kvitova cruised through the second set 6-0 after taking the first in a tiebreak against the unseeded Danielle Collins. In 38 matches in 2018, Osaka won the first set - she won them all and that trend has continued this year despite a much smaller sample size. Kvitova won a season best five titles on the WTA Tour last year and has continued her brilliant form this season by winning the Sydney International in the lead up to the Australian Open. The Czech is yet to lose a set this tournament but has only faced the one seeded player, which was Ash Barty in the quarterfinal.
Osaka's form reads better in that respect having come through four top 30 players in the world and seems to love playing on the big stage if her performance against Serena Williams in last year’s US Open Final is anything to go by. We think she will adopt a similar nothing to lose attitude, and that coupled with her sheer determination to win, should be enough for her to cause a slight upset and lift the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup.
Key Stat: Naomi Osaka has a 9-1 W/L record from her last 10 matches at the Australian Open
