Serena Williams v Simona Halep
Wimbledon women’s singles final, July 13
This year’s Wimbledon women’s singles got the final it deserved. Serena Williams has improved with every match she has played at SW19, with the 37-year-old seeing off Barbora Strycova in straight sets, allowing Czech just three games in the whole match. Playing doubles with Andy Murray seems to have played a part in sharpening up Williams, particularly at the net.
Williams won 89% of her first serve points and 53% of her second serve points. She also hit 28 winners to 10 unforced errors, illustrating just how tight her game was. The American has also won 10 of her last 14 Grand Slam finals, but lost her last final appearance at Wimbledon to Angelique Kerber.
Simona Halep was also impressive in her semi final win over Elina Svitolina, taking just 16 games to win in straight sets. In stark contrast to Williams, Halep has lost nine of her last 12 final appearances. The Romanian has been in fighting form at this year’s Championships and already has a Grand Slam title to her name. This would be the great achievement of her career to date, though.
