Triple J Hottest 100

Australia Day is finally here and the long-awaited Triple J Hottest 100!

Spice up the countdown by having a punt on the market - last week we published a preview on the songs who’ve got a fighting chance of topping the charts. However, there has been plenty of movement since then.

As predicted, "King Kunta" has drifted in the market, however the Kendrick Lamar’s smash hit is still set to be favourite when the countdown begins. The explicit hip hop song has drifted from $1.75 to $2.2 over the weekend. As we predicted, the other front runner, Major Lazer’s "Lean on", has been backed in from $3.50 to as short as $2.6 with William Hill. The song has had a very strong backing on social media in the last few days.

There have been over two million votes this year, from almost 300,000 voters, on a staggering 16,000 songs. A more astonishing fact is that votes were collected from 172 countries so even though over half of the songs who will make the top 100 will be Australian, an Aussie may not come out on top.

With that said, a band from New South Wales have been one of the biggest movers over the weekend. The Rubens song "Hoops" has been hugely popular with punters around the country. This time last week you could get on this song being announced the best at $9 but now it’s as short as $4 with Sportsbet. We’ve been taking plenty of big bets for another Aussie band, Tame Impala. Tame Impala now have two songs among the top six favourites. Bookies are uncertain about their hit "The less I know the better", as Sportsbet have priced it up at $15, however William Hill think it’s a real contender at $8. Another one of their singles "Let it Happen" also has bookies and punters in limbo, with prices ranging from $10 to $16.

With so many votes from overseas we can’t ignore international contenders. One hit being backed in is the catchy "Can’t feel my face" by The Weeknd - the Canadian tune was priced at $15 seven days ago but is now best odds $9. The odds on "Downtown" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have been yo-yoing, they started last week on $34 but came into as short as $13 on Sunday, but as more money has been pumped into the market they’ve drifted back to $21.

Other than the obvious favourites we’ve had a few surprising popular bets on our site over the weekend. "Ship to Wreck" by Florence and the Machine has been a very popular bet at $251, however make sure you search for the best price as Florence’s song is $51 with one bookie. Mark Ronson is no stranger to a chart-topper and one punter has backed his hit "I sat by the Ocean" at $151 with quite a hefty punt. The all South Korean pop band The Buzz received some backing over the weekend but, with so many bets from overseas, this will most likely be patriotic Koreans.

We picked out "Magnolia" by Gang of Youths as a song which could force it’s self into contention at $34, the song came into the market with a $26 price tag but hasn’t attracted any attention since. "Dead Fox" by Courtney Barnett has been hugely popular on social media with female voters, however has drifted to $101 and is definitely worth a sneaky punt. Our expert in the field picked out Jarryd James "Do you remember" as a serious contender a few months back, the song topped the market for a long period in 2015 but has since dropped out of contention and is now priced at $21.
