The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas will be hosting UFC 219 as Cris Cyborg looks to defend her Featherweight title from the ex-Featherweight titleholder Holly Holm.
Other fights that are sure to impress sees a Lightweight battle between Khabib Nurmagomedov, the man who was once assigned as Connor McGregor’s welcome back bout and Edson Barbosa. The next on the card sees Jimmie Rivera put his 21-1-0 record on the line against experienced campaigner John Lineker who has one of the highest win totals in the UFC today.
3 KEY POINTS
Cris Justino (18-1-0) vs, Holly Holm (11-3-0) – Women’s Featherweight Title Fight
Holm has a penchant for staging an upset as she pulled a notorious victory over Ronda Rousey when she was at the peak of her career.
Cyborg on the other hand has been widely renowned as the greatest pound for pound women’s fighter for many years now. Her brutal, aggressive and consistent fighting style sees her smother her opponents with a flurry of strikes.
Holm has little to no ground game and realistically her only chance to win this out will be if the fight stays upright. Although Cyborg loves to KO opponents, I wouldn’t be surprised to see her take this fight to the ground where Holm will feel totally uncomfortable and take away her only real threat, her kicks.
When all is said and done, Holm just doesn’t have the mongrel that Cyborg possesses.
Tip: Cris Cyborg by KO or Submission
Khabib Nurmagomedov (24-0-0) vs, Edson Barbosa (19-4-0)
Tony Ferguson sits firmly in the drivers seat for that honour but Khabib Nurmagomedov is next in line. Khabib’s issues with weight cutting have seen him pull out of a couple of fights dropping him down the contender rankings.
Barbosa is a kick boxer originally, who has made waves in the UFC since growing his MMA skillset. Barbosa’s leg kicks are a thing of beauty as he is the only man to ever record a KO with a spinning leg kick. His last fight ended with a gorgeous flying knee, which put Beneli Dariush to sleep instantly earning him performance of the night honours.
Khabib is a dangerous all rounder. His accuracy with significant strikes outweighs Barbosa’s, as does his defence. Surprisingly Barbosa is statistically more dangerous and efficient on the ground. Don’t le the stats fool you though, Khabib is a beast with the takedown and the odds tell us as much.
Tip: Khabib Nurmagomedov by KO or Submission
Jimmie Rivera (21-1-0) vs, John Lineker (30-8-0)
This fight promises to involve a lot of striking as these two, especially Rivera, don’t like to take it to the ground.
It's hard to look beyond Rivera in this contest. His size will be too much for Lineker to handle. Rivera also has the smarts, which completes him as a package
