Can Neil Warnock's Bluebirds make an instant return to the Premier League?

Cardiff City surprised me last season. I, like most people, expected The Bluebirds to be relegated from the Premier League. Of course, this did happen, but it was the manner of their relegation which surprised me.

Neil Warnock’s squad last season was very poor for Premier League standards, but yet he squeezed every last drop out of them; Cardiff battled until the very, very end—showing bucket-loads of fight, determination and desire—only to fall short at the death.

Unlike Huddersfield they showed plenty of quality; unlike Fulham they showed plenty of backbone, and with the core of their squad intact for the upcoming Championship campaign (and most importantly with Warnock at the helm), I don’t see why Cardiff can’t mount a serious promotion challenge once again.

With eight promotions under his hefty managerial belt, calling Warnock experienced at this level is somewhat of an understatement. He might be 70 years of age, but Warnock’s decision to remain in the Welsh capital is the best thing that could’ve happened to the club: if there’s anyone to guide them to promotion, it’s him.

City have also made moves in the transfer market. The acquisition of midfielder Will Vaulks from Rotherham for just over £2M looks a fantastic piece of business, as does the signing of centre-back Curtis Nelson from Oxford, who will give Warnock another brilliant option at the back.

The Bluebirds haven’t yet lost any of their key men, and this, coupled with a few exciting fresh faces, could make them a serious force in the Championship.

Bobby Reid found it tough going in the Premier League, but I’m expecting him to thrive back in the second-tier, as he did with former club Bristol City – where he scored 19 league goals in his final season before the move to South Wales.

Warnock’s Cardiff will always be tough to beat, and this is a trait which will get your far in the rat race that is the Championship.

I think there are squads better equipped to go up automatically, but a top six finish looks very achievable for Cardiff City this season, and at 11/10, they are third-favourites to at least make the play-offs.
