York Wednesday 15:35 Racecard and Betting Preview

Sporting Life Preview

This isn't a great race for three-year-olds with only four winning in the past 16 years. However, this year's crop look to have the call with only Ulysses of the older horses looking capable of repelling an incredibly strong crop of youngsters. Sir Michael Stoute's Eclipse winner found only the brilliant Enabled too good in the King George and just about holds Barney Roy on that Sandown victory though Richard Hannon's St James's Palace Stakes winner is capable of improving further and has every chance of reversing the form. He was earlier a length behind Churchill in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket before taking his revenge at Ascot where Aidan O'Brien's dual classic winner didn't appear at his best. Ryan Moore rides the latter again after being on board CLIFFS OF MOHER in the Derby and Eclipse but it would be no shock if the latter, who looked all over the winner at Epsom until mugged by Wings Of Eagles, came good again in this. Shutter Speed is the only course and distance winner having landed the Musidora before a wide draw scuppered her chances in the French Oaks where she didn't get much help from the saddle with Frankie Dettori injured.

Oddschecker Verdict

Barney Roy gained revenge on his 2000 Guineas conqueror, CHURCHILL, when landing the St. James's Palace Stakes and although little separates the pair over 1m, the Ballydoyle inmate, as a son of Galileo, may have the upper hand over 1m2f. Ulysses beat Barney Roy in the Eclipse and looks the pick of the older horses, while it will be interesting to see what the market makes of Musidora scorer Shutter Speed after a 66-day break.

Prediction: 1st Churchill, 2nd Ulysses, 3rd Barney Roy
