Ascot 15:50 Racecard & Betting Preview

Sporting Life Preview

CRACKSMAN followed a neck defeat by Capri in the Irish Derby by looking imperious in the Great Voltiguer at York and the Prix Niel at Chantilly, all over 1m4f. The latter pair were on ground with some give and, though taking on very strong opposition over shorter, he can make his stamina count and land his first Group 1. He finished just behind Cliffs Of Moher when Aidan O'Brien's colt was mugged by stable companion Wings Of Eagles at Epsom but their subsequent careers have gone in different directions and Ballydoyle look to have a better chance with the admirable Highland Reel, who beat subsequent Group 1 winners Decorated Knight and Ulysses in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes here in June before a rare lacklustre run in the King George. Barney Roy won the St James's Palace Stakes before just failing to catch Ulysses in the Eclipse then ran out of steam in the Juddmonte at York after taking on Churchill. He's certain to go well while Brametot, a short-head winner in both the French 2000 Guineas and Derby, and Irish Champion Stakes runner-up Poet's Word can also get into the action in what should be a thriller.

Oddschecker Verdict

The absence of certain horses, including last year's winner Almanzor and the late defection of Ulysses to America, takes the gloss from the contest but it is still a highly competitive renewal. Cracksman missed the Arc after winning the Prix Niel at Chantilly and arrives here seeking his first Group 1 success over a trip that arguably looks on the short side for this resolute galloper. Softer ground will be in his favour rather than Barney Roy who is yet to encounter ground of this nature. Brametot warrants respect on his fifth in the Arc to Enable but the vote goes to the older POET'S WORD. Sir Michael Stoute must feel confident to just send him as opposed to fielding two with Ulysses and he has continued to improve throughout the season with a fine effort when runner-up to Decorated Knight in the Irish Champion Stakes last month. Conditions won't bother him and there looks to be more in the locker. Highland Reel and Cliffs Of Moher both have plenty to prove with the former the pick with plenty of racing under his belt and on faster ground, while the latter has been found out at the highest level on more than one occasion.

Prediction: 1st Poets Word, 2nd Brametot, 3rd Cracksman
