Steven Gerrard managed 21 MLS appearances for LA Galaxy, scoring three times as they secured a third place finish in the Western Conference. But the former Liverpool midfielder’s MLS adventure appears to be over before it really began, after the Galaxy were knocked out in the Conference semi-final at the weekend. But what next for Gerrard?
Just last week, ESPN reported that Gerrard had no plans to hang up his boots just yet and quoted the Reds’ stalwart as saying: “I still love coming into training, I still love competing, so if I can carry on and there are opportunities to stay or go somewhere else for six or 12 months, then I’ll consider it”. Two of the clubs reportedly showing an interest in Gerrard’s services are Celtic and Newcastle, which would mean a reunion with Brendan Rodgers (and Kolo Toure) or Rafa Benitez respectively.
It’s Rodgers’ Celtic that are the bookies favourites to sign Gerrard. Celtic are as short as 5/2 to be his next club, with 5/1 still available. On the other hand, you can get a very generous 25/1 on a reunion with Rafa at Newcastle. Interestingly, you can get 18/1 on Gerrard returning to Liverpool with other bookmakers pricing an Anfield return as short as 11/10. But have Liverpool moved on?
