Tammy Abraham World Cup Odds: Roma striker 11/8 to make Southgate’s squad

Tammy Abraham is still better than even money to make Gareth Southgate’s England World Cup squad despite breaking a Serie A scoring record which had stood for 60 years.

Abraham ready for Europa Conference League final

The 24-year-old, reportedly a target for Arsenal this summer, will lead the line for Jose Mourinho’s Roma in tomorrow’s Europa Conference League final against Feyenoord, having plundered 27 goals in all competitions for the Serie A giants including 17 in the league.

A first half double against Torino on Friday night took his tally to 17 and saw him set a new record for the most goals scored by an Englishman in a single Serie A season. The previous record had stood since Gerry Hitchens netted 16 times for Inter Milan in 1961/62.

How do his World Cup chances compare with other strikers?

Despite his goalscoring exploits, which have taken Roma back into the Europa League for next season, he remains 11/8 to make Gareth Southgate’s World Cup 2022 squad in Qatar later this year. Most notably that’s longer odds than Dominic Calvert-Lewin (best price Evens), who has endured an injury ravaged season at Goodison Park.

Calvert-Lewin scored in the first three Premier League matches of the season before missing four months between August and January with thigh and toe injuries. On his return, he struggled for form and picked up more knocks but did manage to add two more to his league tally including the winner which saved Everton from Premier League relegation at home to Crystal Palace.

Abraham has, however, moved ahead of Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins (best price 3/1) in the England squad betting odds. Watkins scored three fewer Premier League goals this season compared to last (11 to 14) but did score his second international goal in England’s last game against Ivory Coast.

If Roma’s Abraham and Villa’s Watkins are the value bets on the striker front at this stage, Marcus Rashford would be a big avoid at a current best price of 1/6. The 24-year-old has 12 international goals from nearly 50 caps (46) but scored just five goals in all competitions for Manchester United this season from a total of 32 matches.
