Is Gareth Southgate the man manager England need to achieve success in 2018 and beyond?
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls – Gareth Southgate is being widely tipped as the next England manger. Really.
On Thursday last week the England U21’s boss was a long shot at 25/1 but on the back of Roy’s swift resignation last night and backing by a number of former England internationals, his odds have been cut dramatically to as short as 5/4.
Southgate's managerial pedigree peaks at winning the 80-minute match, Under-21 Toulon Tournament in May against some very abject opposition. He masterminded victories over Portugal, Guinea, Paraguay and Japan to win the group before beating France in the final.
It seems Southgate has much in common with his potential predecessor Roy Hodgson. He took charge of the Under-21’s in 2013, went through the qualifying stages of Euro 2015 unbeaten before failing to get out of the group.
Here’s to Southgate and another unbeaten qualifying campaign.
