Following the news that the FA want to speak to Steve Bruce about the vacant England manager position the betting market has already reacted strongly.
Despite still being favourite, money for Sam Allardyce has drifted while Bruce has come in from 25/1 to 12/1 with Bet365 and is at 8/1 with BetVictor.
Allardyce spoke to the FA last week and would have been keen to impress the board of selectors as he looks to land the biggest job of his career. But things seem to have gone quiet on the Allardyce front, not that people were shouting from the rooftops about it, as attention now turns elsewhere.
We are suspecting the FA weren’t too impressed with Allardyce and are hoping for Bruce to shine in the upcoming interview. Support from Sir Alex Ferguson for Allardyce prompted a strong response from the FA but question marks are raised as to why he was never at all considered for the Manchester United job by Ferguson, who had a clear sway in the appointment.
With not too dissimilar managerial styles between Bruce and Allardyce it appears the FA are keen to steady the ship rather than try something different. Wedged in between Allardyce and Bruce remains Klinsmann as the current second favourite.
Famed for not risking too much in their England appointments, with Brian Clough being the ideal argument to back that claim, some will be eager for the FA to take a fresh approach and have a serious look at Eddie Howe as England manager. Priced as big as 16/1.
Although Howe did struggle at Burnley he clearly has something about him with his success at Bournemouth and is certainly someone that many are unsure about. Money is fluctuating around Howe and while many argue he is too experienced the role of Harry Redknapp as football advisor, something he is clearly pushing with the FA, would be a good fit.
