It’s clear that Paderborn aren’t going to be relegated with a whimper. While they lack a certain cutting edge and inability to win matches, Steffen Baumgart has ensured his side are always competitive and their last two results—draws against Fortuna Dusseldorf and Hoffenheim—have stopped the basement boys from being cut adrift.

However, it’s Augsburg who I favour on Wednesday. Their performance against Schake last time out wasn’t akin to a side battling relegation, as they bullied and, quite frankly, outclassed David Wagner’s side to pull nicely clear of Fortuna in the relegation play-off.

Watching the Schalke game unfold, it felt like a watershed moment for Augsburg, who performed with real belief and swagger, and I suspect this’ll carry over into Wednesday’s game.

Therefore, I’m backing Augsburg to win this one. Paderborn are the third-lowest scorers in the division (with 31 goals in their 27 games), and it’s only Dennis Srbeny who I see as a viable goal threat amongst their ranks.

Augsburg, on the other hand, will rely on the hard work and harrying of 11-goal Florian Niederlechner up front, and he’ll fancy a battle against visiting centre-backs Sebastian Schonlau and Uwe Hunemeier.

Augsburg beat Paderborn 1-0 back in November, and I believe they’re a good price to continue their momentum after the excellent Schalke performance and beat a spirited yet limited Paderborn outfit.
