Atalanta play their first ever knockout Champions League tie in Bergamo as they welcome historic winners Real Madrid to the north of Italy. La Dea have been one of the stories of the last few years, sustainable development, canny recruitment and expert management has made them a serious force at home and on the continent. They’ve recently reached the Coppa Italia final, continue to be in with a sniff of the Scudetto and managed to get out of a tricky looking group in this competition. 

Huge credit must go to the likeable Gianpiero Gasperini in the dugout. His attack-focused approach is not only attractive on the eye, but has also yielded some terrific results. He’s persisted with a 3-4-1-2 formation for the most part which gets the most out of his carefully assembled squad but it’s the insistent pressing an ability to pen sides into their own half which is most admirable.

Gasperini and co will smell blood as a depleted Real come to town. Zinedine Zidane has an excellent record in this tournament but he has his work cut out to get a result here. Karim Benzema, Eden Hazard, Marcelo, Sergio Ramos, Dani Carvajal, Rodrygo and Fede Valverde are just some of the names missing. It wouldn’t surprise me if Zidane would walk away with a one goal defeat given the circumstances.

One thing that will play into Los Blancos’ hands is their opportunity to create chances given Atalanta’s expansive approach. I think they’ll score but ultimately lose and the 3/1 on a home win and both teams to score looks a cracking price.
