Argentina vs Mexico prediction, lineups, results and betting tips brought to you by oddschecker football expert George Gamble.
It’s a must-win for Argentina after suffering a shock loss to Saudi Arabia. They’ve made it out of the group in their last four World Cup competitions but if they lose here, they’ll be on an early flight home.
Meanwhile, Guillermo Ochoa was once again the man of the moment as he saved a Robert Lewandowski penalty to earn his side a point and it means they’re in a great position to qualify.
Argentina vs Mexico Stats
- Lautaro Martinez had two goals ruled out in Argentina’s loss to Saudi Arabia
- Argentina need to win and will apply constant pressure, meaning corners look likely
- Argentina have scored at least twice in their last seven matches against Mexico in all competitions
Argentina vs Mexico Prediction:
Betting Tip: Lautaro Martinez to score anytime
I went with this exact same pick in Argentina’s first match against Saudi Arabia and it would’ve been a winner were it not for a bizarre offside decision. He also notched another which was once again ruled out, but with the way he took those chances, I’ll happily back him to get in on the scoring action again here.
Only Lionel Messi took more shots than Martinez and it looks extremely likely that Scaloni will deploy the same front two for their clash with Mexico. As expected, Lionel Messi got himself on the scoresheet and once again he will be the man that many expect to rise to the occasion and take the plaudits, but Lautaro Martinez is an excellent goalscorer in his own right and he’ll be eager to finally see one of his efforts on target count as a goal.
He’s a player that frequently looks for opportunities to get a shot on goal, as seen already for Inter Milan this season having registered 61 shots in 21 appearances. I’ll have a play on the 2/1 available that Martinez can hit the back of the net.
Betting Tip: Argentina -2 corner handicap
La Albiceleste have to go out, put in an excellent performance and get the win here, otherwise their chances of securing passage to the knockout stages looks in a perilous state.
Argentina completed almost three times as many passes as Saudi Arabia and absolutely dominated possession. But they still ended up losing and were left to chase the game which saw them rack up the corners. With Lionel Scaloni’s men having to go all out for victory, we can expect them to pen Mexico back in an attempt to break them down and create opportunities.
This match could see most of the action come from either flank with wingers playing a key role and given Argentina have beaten Mexico to nil in all of the last three meetings, they’ll be confident that they’ll create some key moments. However, the longer Mexico hold on, the more likely desperation settles in and we could see an abundance of corners.
As such, another high corner count seems likely and I like the 21/20 available on Argentina covering a -2 corner handicap.
