The round of 16 gets underway as the Netherlands face off against The Stars and Stripes in Doha. Louis Van Gaal’s men have successfully hit the back of the net in all of their games so far, but a match against a USA side that has kept clean sheets in three of their last four outings will pose a major test to their credentials.

Netherlands vs USA Stats

  • The USA have won the corner count in every World Cup match they have played so far
  • Both outfits will put a focus on keeping things tight in the early stages of this clash
  • USA’s intensity could be a key factor here and their midfield trio of McKennie, Adams and Musah will be tough to break through

Netherlands vs USA Prediction:

Betting Tip: Over 3.5 USA corners

Louis Van Gaal’s Netherlands outfit enjoyed a relatively simple path to the last 16 after claiming victories over Senegal and hosts Qatar either side of a 1-1 draw with Ecuador. This match against a youthful looking USA side looks set to be their toughest match yet.

I agree that the Oranjes should be the market favourites, however, I'm very surprised to see just how heavy favourites they are. Netherlands have looked less than rock solid in a defensive capacity and have relied on the offensive brilliance of Cody Gakpo. But that’s not conducive to long-term success.

The USA are clearly targeting the next tournament and getting as far as they can here in Qatar remains the target. The midfield trio of Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah have been a key component to how Gregg Berhalter’s side have approached each match.

That should be the case once again here, and I think the Netherlands will find themselves under the cosh in various moments. The Stars and Stripes have hit at least four corners in all of their games so far, and I think they’ll hit that number again here.

Over 3.5 USA corners - 2pts @ 8/11

Betting Tip: Half-Time Draw

The Khalifa International Stadium will play host as these two outfits go head-to-head with the winner booking their place in the quarter-finals. It’s a huge occasion and although it can be argued that the Netherlands have more quality throughout their squad, they have had it fairly easy thus far.

The USA have shown that they’re a match for the best in Europe. In my opinion, they should’ve won their match against England but were unable to take their chances and that’s something that needs addressing.

Gregg Berhalter will be exceptionally pleased with the intensity his side has shown and will be instructing them to do exactly the same as they have been in this clash. It will definitely be a battle for midfield supremacy with the tenacity of the USA looking to outwork the quality and finesse of the Netherlands.

I’m not sure we’ll see a goal-fest here, and I believe if anything, the USA looks a far more organised outfit and will cause problems. But I personally think any deciding goal will arrive in the second-half of action and so a draw at half-time looks a likely outcome.

Half time draw - 1pt @ 1/1
