19:45 Tuesday
Scotland secured a 3-0 win over Cyprus in their last outing but it was a scoreline that somewhat flattered the hosts. In similar fashion, Spain managed a 3-0 win over Norway but were lucky not to concede and may not have it all their own way at Hampden Park.
Scotland vs Spain Stats
- Spain’s last six European Championship qualifiers have witnessed scoring after the 80th minute
- Four of Scotland’s last five matches have seen at least two second half goals scored
- Spain have opened the scoring in six of their last seven outings but Steve Clarke’s side have scored in all of their last nine whilst playing the role of hosts
Scotland vs Spain Prediction
Betting Tip: Over 1.5 second-half goals
Two late Scott McTominay goals guided the hosts to a 3-0 win over Cyprus on Saturday and it extended their winning run in tournament qualification games (excluding play-offs) to seven games. However, that run will be under threat when they welcome Spain to Hampden Park and their defence will be put under constant pressure.
Spain’s 3-0 win over Norway was full of drama, but the most notable moment was Manchester City midfielder Rodri’s challenge on Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard and in truth, Spain were lucky to have kept a clean sheet. An away match against Scotland will not be straightforward and they'll need to break down a determined backline.
Four of the hosts last five games have produced at least two second half goals, with the only one that didn't coming in a 0-0 draw away to Ukraine. The opening 45 minutes could be quite tight but a single goal may open this one up and with the visitors last six Euro qualifiers seeing a goal scored after the 80th minute, I like the look of two or more goals arriving in the second half.
Betting Tip: Both Teams to Score
It would be remarkable if Scotland were able to keep a clean sheet against Spain considering they haven’t won against a side currently inside FIFA’s top-ten since 2013. The visitors have hit the back of the net in 24 of their previous 25 outings and are the overwhelming favourites coming into this clash and should be able to find their way onto the scoresheet.
However, Scotland always believe they can cause problems and have scored in five of their previous six outings. They’re in something of a purple patch for them and confidence will be high as they look to make a statement by securing a positive result against Spain.
I do think Spain will find a way to emerge victorious but on home soil, I think Scotland are good for a goal and can contribute to the scorecount. With that in mind, the 21/20 available on both teams to score on Tuesday evening makes plenty of appeal.
