Aston Villa have the chance to leapfrog Manchester City in the table on Wednesday night and blow the Premier League title race wide open ahead of the busy festive period. Unai Emery’s side are a point behind the champions and three points behind the league leaders, Arsenal.

Aston Villa are the underdogs coming into this one but their home form is enough to strike fear into any opponent. Unai Emery’s side have won all six of their league matches at Villa Park this season and have looked menacing in the process.

They are averaging 3.83 goals per home game and have scored at least three in them all. However, they have failed to keep a clean sheet across those matches and are yet to face any opponents who are in the current top seven of the Premier League.

The Villains also have a miserable record against Manchester City. They haven’t beaten the current juggernaut of English football in a decade and have picked up just two draws in the 15 head-to-heads since then.

Manchester City had to settle for a 3-3 draw against Spurs and they will have felt hard done by given the balance of play. City cranked up the pressure on a Tottenham side that were plagued with injuries. Pep’s team finished the match with a much greater xG than the visitors but some shaky defending meant the spoils were shared.

It was a similar story in City’s draws with Liverpool and Chelsea. The treble winners had the better chances and the lion’s share of possession but they failed to make it count when it mattered. Pep Guardiola won’t panic and he knows his City side are capable of chasing down any rival for the title but the tricky fixtures keep on coming.

Over 23.5 shots looks a good bet in this match given the importance of the fixture. Both sides will be desperate to earn a massive three points and we should see chances at both ends as a result.
