Two of the richest clubs in the world go head-to-head. Expect goals galore!
Real Madrid v PSG – Wednesday 19:45 – BT Sport
It’s the glamour tie of the whole round: Spanish giants Real Madrid take on French titans Paris St Germain (making them both seem normal sized). With the attacking power that both teams possess, goals almost seem a certainty. PSG have scored in every game they’ve been in since a 0-0 draw against Montpellier in September, 30 games ago. Real Madrid on the other hand have not scored in five of their 39 matches this season, which seems a lot worse but it’s still an absurd 87% success rate.
Amongst all the odds-on shots there are in the goals markets, one stands out for me. The French side have scored 126 goals in 38 games and have no trouble in the ‘bigger games’ either, putting four past Bayern Munich in two games and two past Monaco away from home. You can get 19/20 on PSG to score two or more goals and that looks a great price.
The fact that it’s a first leg tends to bring the draw into play in most ties, but with these free-scoring teams putting up absurd stats, most people wouldn’t be surprised at any score. But 14/5 for the stalemate looks worth a small punt, on the virtue that PSG should be in the game at all times, with their directness lending well to getting at Madrids backline. Anything they can take back to the Parc Des Princes will be seen as a bonus and although Real have been prone to the odd duff result this season, it would take a brave man to back them losing at home in a competition they have dominated in recent years.
Neymar has been the subject of intense speculation in the last few weeks, with a transfer to Real not out of the possibility according to some papers. It would be just typical of him to steal the show on Wednesday and I can see it happening. He’s netted in PSG’s last three league games and at 11/2, he looks a fair price to open the scoring at the Bernabéu.
