Fresh off their third consecutive Europa League success, Sevilla, under 2015 Copa America winning coach Jorge Sampaoli, kick off their league campaign against an Espanyol side who have become experts in solid mid-table finishes. Like Sevilla, they are under new management in ex-Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores.
Sevilla have made The Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan a fortress, only losing there five times in the last two seasons and 27 of their 37 La Liga wins in that time have come at home. Espanyol are hardly strong away from home either: last season they won only three games on the road while conceding 46 goals. Sanchez Flores has gone for experience over the summer bringing in 35 year-old Martin Demichelis in a bid to help a defence which failed to keep an away clean sheet in 2015/16.
Another thing which links the two clubs is goals. As strong as Sevilla are at home they don’t tend to win their games to nil. In fact, in over half of their home games last season both team managed to find the target. Despite losing 14 away games last term Espanyol scored in 11 as 14 saw more than two goals. As a result, we’re backing Sevilla to Win and Over 2.5 Goals, to give Jorge Sampaoli a successful start to his stint in charge.
