It’s almost impossible to gauge how much in hand A HARE BREATH (best price 9/4) had when scoring in emphatic fashion over today’s C&D last time out, but there’s more than a fair chance a 12lb hit by the handicapper still underestimates his true level of ability. The overriding feature of that performance in a similar race last time was the way he breezed past his field coming down the hill and even withstanding his huge absence off the track, the son of Alkaadhem was just as strong on the punishing climb to the line in the latter stages. His ambitious trainer has spoken in glowing terms about his charge in the interim, suggesting the seven-year-old may have improved further still and if that turns out to be the case, his rivals are set for an uncomfortable afternoon’s work.

Bookmakers have been on the receiving end of many Warren Greatrex-trained gambles in handicaps so far this season – Aloomomo, Missed Approach and April Dusk the most recent trio – and in the shape of ONE TRACK MIND (best price 10/3) , the old enemy could well be ducking for cover once again. Thought good enough by his shrewd Lambourn handler to run in the Grade 1 Challow Hurdle last season off the back of just two previous hurdle starts, the son of Flemensfirth acquitted himself with distinction up against the likes of Parlour Games, Vyta Du Roc and Blaklion and a repeat of that level of performance would easily be good enough for him to have a huge say in a race of this nature off a mark of just 139. Obviously, fitness has to be taken on trust, but the vibes coming out of the Greatrex camp are more positive than negative and if there’s one horse in the line-up capable of taking it to another level, he looks the most likely.
