Tom has 3 tips for Saturday's racing.
Townshend could be lobbed in based upon his Irish debut which has seen the 3rd come out and win at Cheltenham. The first didn’t frank the form though and, for all the hood looks set to suit, there’s plenty of juice to be had in other prices. A Hare Breath is a well treated horse but the plan was the County and connections maintain he didn’t really stay last time at the trip. I like Might Bite but will save a sole play in the race for For Good Measure who was progressive prior to a poor run in the Imperial Cup. I fancy the ground and trip really found him out in hot company and, though a winner on deep ground previously, he’s bred to prefer better and further. A brother to Balthazar King, today’s conditions could really be his thing and he's worth chancing at the prices.
Spookydooky looks a thorough stayer and is worth a bet in the Midlands National for a trainer that won it a few years ago. Stamina won him the day at Newbury before he was held by a winner that made all at Haydock and that at a time when the yard were entering a quiet spell. He never really travelled last time at Ascot but that’s strong form and he still kept on nicely. His trainer had the favourite for this last year and things didn’t work out but no doubt half an eye will have been on this and there should be plenty more to come on just his 5th chase start. Subtle Grey looks a future national horse but this may come a little soon and preference is for Cultram Abbey who fell at the first in the Eider. He was a winner over an inadequate trip prior to that and has always shaped like a proper stayer. He would have gone close over 3 miles 2 at Kelso but for a fall and, whilst the odd jumping error is a concern, he is improving and well worth another go over this sort of trip.
