The Newmarket trainer has the knack of knowing exactly where to place his horses to good effect and could have well have found the perfect opportunity for Gimlet to get his name on the scorecard for the first time in the Pristine Cars Yorkshires Largest Suv 4x4 Centre Handicap at Wetherby (8.10) this evening.
The Poets Voice gelding earned a handicap mark of 65 after three unplaced efforts in his first season but showed he would soon be winning when runner-up, beaten only a length-and-a-half, to the well-backed Recognition over a mile and a half at Lingfield last month.
Gimlet stayed on in a manner that suggested this step up to a mile-and-six furlongs would be well in his favour, and he is a half-brother to Petaluma who won over an extended two miles. Gimlet can be expected to improve for that first run and looks worth a 1pt investment.

Earlier on the card, Chevalier Du Lac could well come up trumps in the Racing UK Profits Return To Racing Maiden Stakes (6.10). The Sir Prancealot colt showed plenty of promise when runner-up, beaten four-and-a-half lengths, to Twizzell on his debut at Beverley 15 days ago and the winner did the form no harm when finishing a respectable fourth to Vona in a listed fillies event at York last week.
This extended five furlongs can prove ideal at this stages of his career and he can get off the mark at the second attempt.
At Lingfield, Raven's Corner is fancied to make it third time lucky in the Ryan Vehicles Maiden Stakes (Div1) (2.20).
The John Gosden-trained colt finished a promising fifth to stablemate and subsequent impressive York Handicap winner Castle Harbour on his debut over seven furlongs at Newmarket in April and put in another solid effort when runner-up, beaten a length-and-a-half, to War Story over the same trip at Chelmsford later that month. The step up to a mile looks perfect and he can take this at the expense of main rival Banish.
