Racing UK's Tom Stanley gives us his picks from Wednesday's action at Ascot.
21 in the Jersey and it could pay to race in and around Gifted Master, drawn 5. In fact, horses will do well to go with him but I fancy he’ll set the tone for this and preference seemed to be for far side/low numbers yesterday. Forge is a colt with a beautiful pedigree and he looked very good when winning at Doncaster on return. He was well backed last time at Sandown in the Heron but the ground may well have been quick enough looking at his action that day and a drop in trip seems sensible. He has a bit to find but this is just his 4th start and he’s well drawn. I also want to chance C Note at the prices. He was no match for Gifted Master over 6 last time but the yard were a little quiet then and he should appreciate a return to 7 furlongs, the trip at which he made his debut, and the ground holds no fears.
Ante post play for the Hunt Cup didn’t get in and we can’t change that. There’s not bundles of pace on but I’m siding with low and the big field will still ensure those in behind get competitive. Tempted by Battle Of Marathon but he did his mark no favours last time in Listed company. Old boy Balty Boys looks out of form but, 4th in this last year when winning his side, no doubt this has been the plan all season. He has course form on soft, is draw lowest of the lows and the young, talented Callum Shepherd takes off 5lb. I’m also keen on Secret Brief who won the Lincoln off 4lb lower in April. Not seen since, he gets similar ground today and still looks fairly treated. I like his draw and he clearly enjoys it here based upon his keeping on course and distance 3rd towards the end of last year.
Anamba is still a healthy price for the Sandringham. She beat Coolmore on yielding ground on debut and, for all that filly hasn’t gone on this term, she was only beaten 7 lengths in the Fillies’ Mile and that’s top form. Anamba was a comfortable winner on return in Listed company, just her 3rd career start, and there should be bundles more to come. She has a Coronation entry, a Pretty Polly entry and an Irish Oaks entry so is clearly well regarded and she’s well drawn to get plenty of cover in this big field, which I think will come down the centre in 1 group. The step up in trip should suit and I thought she’d be shorter than she is.
