RacingUK's Tom Stanley gives us his insight to Saturday's racing at Haydock and Sandown.
Brando is likely to be a warm order in the Sprint Stakes and he’s drawn ok in 8. The lower the better as a rule here though and Willytheconqueror comes out of 4 and boasts a solid record over course and distance. He was a winner here 4 starts back and bumped into Easton Angel last time, when doing best of those from the rear. She looks back to somewhere near her best too and should make the transition back to Group level with relative ease. Willytheconqueror is one of four 3 year olds in the race, the age group that has won 6 of the last 9 renewals. All his wins have come with ease underfoot and 14/1 underestimates his chance.
The Coral Challenge should see Mutamakkin go off favourite and rightly so after his win here last time. He’s unexposed and progressive, though the slight niggle is the lack of pace on. He had things run to suit last time but may want to race a little more prominently here. With that in mind it could be worth chancing 8 year old Highland Colori. It’s been a while since he was in the winners enclosure but he’s a well treated horse and has looked back on song in a visor on his last 2 starts. If he can get prominent from stall 8, something he couldn’t do when drawn very wide over course and distance a few starts back, then he has a sniff. He has won here and is worth chancing at the prices.
2 in the Old Newton Cup in the form of Tawdeea and Penglai Pavilion. The first was a touch unlucky in the Zetland Gold Cup, the form of which is strong, and he bumped into the progressive King Bolete last time when the winner made all. He’s up again in the weights but is going the right way, proved he stayed last time and should have this run to suit with the ground in his favour. There really is some pace on here and that could also suit Penglai Pavilion. He got a little too far back in the Ascot Stakes, as did most of them, but that was a very satisfactory return to action on the level and this drop back in trip should not inconvenience him. I fear Desert Encounter a great deal but he’s well found in the market.
