Tom Stanley has three selections on the first day of Glorious Goodwood.
Main plays of the day come in the Goodwood opener in the form of Best Of Times and Our Channel. The former shaped for a step back up in trip on reappearance at Chester but things haven’t gone to plan in 2 subsequent starts. He chased a strong enough pace on good to soft ground at Ascot before racing the wrong side in the straight at Sandwon last time on soft. The main excuse is that ground though as I’m sure he wants quick ground and he gets that here. Cheekpieces go on, he’s not badly drawn and expect much better for the trainer who saddled the 2nd in this last year. One from left field is Our Channel. He’s still a fairly treated horse on peak form but he does need to bounce back from a poor run last time. He lines up off 5lb lower though and hopefully he will settle better than he did at York. That run came after a break and, if settling, he’s well drawn to attack in behind a couple of likely front runners. His jockey rides this track ever so well too.
Joe Fanning has a good record at Goodwood and he rides Notarised in the staying handicap, a horse he has won with over course and distance. 6lb higher than for that win, he’s well drawn to get handy but hopefully won't go forward. 2 of his 7 career wins have come from the front but there is other pace on and he’ll likely sit in behind before making his challenge late on. That said he did go to the front in this race last year but that came off 5lb higher and he’s looking increasingly well treated. Again he wasn’t beaten far over course and distance in May, strong form, and he lines up here off a 3lb lower mark.
