I do like Ian Williams as a middle-distance trainer, and he knows the seven-year-old Oi The Clubb Oi’s well as he has always been in his care.

Oi The Clubb Oi’s is a scopey sort who won when stepped up to 1m 2F off a mark of 60 as a three-year-old and was thought mature enough to go juvenile hurdling.

The gelding was a natural over hurdles and after going down by 2 lengths in a Grade 2, ended up running off a mark of 130 in the Fred Winter handicap at the Cheltenham Festival.

He came back to the flat and won off 67 over today’s 1m 6F course and distance, but then the wheels came off his career. He developed a wind problem which caused two poor runs, but then two long-term injuries kept him off the track for 350 days and then a further 482 days.

His return to the track this year has been slow, with three runs on the all-weather over 2 miles which have looked like stepping stones to help nurse him back to full fitness.

They weren’t devoid of promise postmarking 65 on his second run back, and now he returns to Nottingham where he won both his races and is two from two at the track, I can see this was probably his first short-term winning target.

Off a reduced mark of 60, he looks dangerously well handicapped and must be backed.

At 16/1 available with Bet365, he looks cracking each-way value and I recommend 1 point each way

He is still value at 8/1.

Tristan Davidson is a fantastic dual-purpose trainer. His jumps strike rate of 16% (32 wins from 199 runners) is impressive enough, but that improves to 19% on the flat (35 from 189).

He sends out Proton for his first stable run and whilst he has been off the track since October last year there are reasons for optimism.

Proton runs his best races when fresh, including winning off a 205-day break. That was over today’s course and distance where he postmarked a tasty looking 81.

Today he returns to Carlisle for the first time since that win off a lowly-looking mark of 60 which gives him a huge chance if Davidson has worked his oracle.

With 4mm of rain due before racing, the ground should ride slow enough for him, and he can get his career back on track.

I, therefore, recommend 1 point each way at 16/1, he is still value at 8/1.
