AT LIBERTY (best price 7/4) is beginning to cut a little bit of a frustrating character, but in his defence, he did face an opponent clearly miles better than his mark here last time out and for that reason, he’s afforded another chance to finally get off the mark.

Placed on all five of his previous starts this season, Marco Botti’s gelding arrived here well fancied to land what appeared a fairly winnable Class 5 event and although he failed in his bid to do so, it’s hard to suggest he did too much wrong.

The winner, Omniscient, was clearly an 85+ handicapper masquerading on the low leagues but if you take him out of the equation, the son of Muhaarar beat the rest by ten lengths. Back to the same C&D with nothing of that level against him, the honest three-year-old can have his day in the sun.

ROUSAY (best price 17/2) has plenty to find according to the official ratings, but as is often the case in these sort of listed fillies’ events, there probably isn’t that much between top to bottom as the numbers suggests and with some of her best form coming over today’s track, Richard Hannon’s inmate is fancied to punch above her weight.

Runner-up on her first outing at the Wiltshire venue back in May, the daughter of Muhaarar filled out the same position in a much better race on her return visit two starts ago and that was the first indication that she was just as effective over 1m2f as a mile.

Sticking to the same trip at Goodwood last time out, the three-year-old grey looked in deep waters up against several improving fillies in a competitive 0-105 handicap, but she once again proved equal to the task when chasing home the useful State Occasion, who’d previously been placed at Royal Ascot.

Good on the numbers that day, she now has a collection of time figures that has her not a million miles off some of the higher rated fillies here today and with several of her rivals coming here with questions to ask, it wouldn’t be the biggest shock in the world if she were to gain some valuable black type for the breeding sheds.

FRISKY (best price 5/2) really turned on the afterburners when scoring with loads in hand at Leicester last time out and with her speed figure from not only from that display but quite a few in the past suggesting she could be a good bit better than her current assessment, Simon Pearce’s filly looks set to continue her handler’s recent purple patch.

Extremely unlucky in hindsight to bump into potential Group 1 filly Royal Aclaim at Bath three starts ago, the daughter of Bated Breath also had the misfortune to race against two above-average types for the grade at Hamilton next time out.

Kept to novice company for her most recent encounter, the three-year-old chestnut took a keen hold towards the rear in the early stages and when asked to go and win her race inside the final two furlongs, she quickened in really impressive style, pulling six lengths clear in a matter of strides. Good on the numbers both overall and closing sectionals, she’s going to be difficult for the rest to contain if in the same form on what appears handy mark on handicap debut.

VIRTUOSO (best price 7/2) has yet to get off the mark in six attempts but she is getting ever closer and her latest effort over today’s C&D would give her an obvious chance of going one place better if repeating a similar level of form.

A little one paced on her two previous starts at Class 5 level against her own age group, the daughter of Passing Glance was quite well backed to get the job done facing a bunch of older horses who were by-and-large exposed, but unfortunately for her and her supporters she bumped into the locally-trained Zambezi Magic who raise her game to another level under the prevailing conditions.

Despite being well beaten by the winner, she did, however, manage to clock a decent time figure in defeat and with today’s much quicker surface seen as no great negative, the well-bred filly can put her valuable course experience to good use.
