Aidan O’Brien’s runner looks made for the St Leger
Santiago has thrown himself into contention for the Derby and St Leger following an impressive display in the Queen’s Vase.
50/1 before the race, bookmakers were quick to cut his odds into as short as 14/1 for the Epsom Classic next month. There is still some firms offering 20/1 on Aidan O’Brien’s runner.
The three-year-old was well supported throughout the day, and showed a lovely turn of foot to ease past his rivals on the straight, staying on extremely well to the line.
It was the eye-catching way he stayed on in the closing stages that gave the impression he is cut out for the St Leger.
He clearly loved the 1m6f trip, and that has in turn seen him shorten from a 33/1 shot to as short as 7/1 for the St Leger in Doncaster. Two firms are still laying 12/1 on him through.
This looks the more likely target at this stage, so it is no surprise to see him shorten so much. He looked a very classy type, beating some very good rivals with ease.
The St Leger market is still far from clear, but Santiago has earnt himself a spot near the top of the market after today’s performance.
