Washington DC Free Bets

DC sports betting returned to Washington between 2018 and 2019, once the PASPA federal ban was overturned. In December 2018, DC introduced new legislation that would legalize sports betting which was then approved in early 2019, creating a new industry for retail and online sports betting in Washington DC.

History of Online Sports Betting in Washington DC

The DC City Council brought about a new sports betting bill to the House in early 2019. The bill was sponsored by multiple council members, demonstrating the importance of the industry in economic terms for the state. Mayor Muriel Bowser eventually put her name to the bill in February 2019, with the bill formally brought into law from May 2019.

As part of the bill, it was agreed that DC Lottery will oversee and regulate sports betting in DC, as well as operating a mobile sportsbook too. GambetDC remains the only mobile sportsbook in DC, although it is possible to bet in person at the William Hill Sportsbook in DC’s Capital One Arena. The William Hill mobile app is also available to those in the vicinity of the Capital One Arena, underpinned by geolocation technology.

Is Sports Betting Legal in DC?

Yes, DC sports betting has been legal since May 2019. It’s now possible to bet on sports at permitted retail sportsbooks, as well as regulated mobile sportsbooks.

The DC sports betting bill that secured approval by state legislature categorizes mobile sportsbook licenses as Class A and Class B licenses. Class A licensees can offer mobile app-based sports betting within a two-block radius of their sports or entertainment venue. In the District of Columbia, this includes the following venues so far:

• Capital One Arena

• Audi Field

• Nationals Park

• St. Elizabeths East Entertainment and Sports Arena

Class B licensees are restricted to offering mobile app-based sports betting within their own premises.

Can I Bet on Sports Online in DC?

Yes, it is possible to bet on sports online in DC using mobile apps, but it’s not possible to bet online using browser-based platforms. This is still outlawed within DC state lines. DC Lottery’s GambetDC app is the primary mobile sportsbook for DC sports betting enthusiasts, although over time this app has been much maligned by bettors for its poor user experience.

It has since experienced a new competitor to the market in the shape of William Hill, whose temporary retail sportsbook and mobile app has attracted significantly greater revenues than GambetDC, operated by Intralot.

What Online Sportsbooks Will Operate in DC?

Wondering which sports betting DC operators will arrive in the coming months and years? Reports suggest that BetMGM’s arrival is imminent. An access agreement with the MLB’s Washington Nationals will see BetMGM offer a retail sportsbook and a mobile app available for use within the vicinity of Nationals Park.

In addition, FanDuel Sportsbook has also secured a future agreement with MLS franchise DC United to offer regulated sports betting at Audi Field. With FanDuel and BetMGM look to get active in the District of Columbia, there is every chance that DraftKings Sportsbook is also looking to get a piece of the action too.

Here’s a little more background information on all three of these new potential sportsbook operators for the DC sports betting industry:

BetMGM in DC

BetMGM offers a slick and consistent user experience. Available across multiple US states, BetMGM is underpinned by the MGM moniker that has become synonymous with the gambling industry in Las Vegas.

DraftKings in DC

DraftKings is a trusted brand, having enjoyed significant success for its fantasy sports arm. DraftKings is well-known for its regular odds boosts and hefty sign-up bonuses. You only need a single account for its sportsbook and DFS services too.

FanDuel in DC

Similar to DraftKings, FanDuel made its name as an innovative DFS operator. It has since developed into an intuitive sportsbook app with a huge choice of sports betting markets and highly competitive odds to get the best value from your major league sport picks.

What Are the Best Sports Betting Promotions in DC?

Given that the likelihood of BetMGM, DraftKings and FanDuel bringing their regulated sportsbooks to Washington DC is high, let’s take a quick look at their welcome promotions for new sign-ups:

What Will be the Best DC Sports Betting App?

The general consensus among DC sports betting fanatics is that the GambetDC app will soon be overtaken by rival apps as the best Washington DC sports betting app. With established names like William Hill already operational and BetMGM, DraftKings and FanDuel slated to arrive in the coming months, it’s clear there will be plenty of competition to become the District of Columbia’s number-one sports betting app.

Where Can I Bet on Sports in DC Now?

The easiest place to place a legal sports bet in Washington DC today is GambetDC. This mobile sportsbook allows you to place wagers freely anywhere within the District of Columbia. It does not have a desktop online sportsbook and is only available via its downloadable app. Offline, you can visit the Capital One Arena, which contains a retail William Hill sportsbook.

here are additional retail sportsbooks at Audi Field, St. Elizabeths East Entertainment and Sports Arena and Nationals Park. New operators like BetMGM are seeking licensure to offer mobile sports betting within a two-block radius of venues like Nationals Park.

Can You Play Fantasy Sports in DC?

Daily fantasy sports (DFS) are something of a grey area in DC. That’s because the sports betting bill does not cover DFS, meaning there is no applicable law regarding DFS in Washington DC. DFS market leaders FanDuel and DraftKings both accept users in DC. They give you multiple opportunities to win real cash prizes by hand-picking the best athletes and players in your DFS teams.

Can You Bet on Horse Racing Now in DC?

Although it has long been easier to wager on horse racing than any other sport – due to horse racing’s exemption from the 1992 federal law prohibiting most sports betting – Washington DC is one of six US states that still bans horse racing betting of all types. Even sites like TVG and Twinspires are not currently permitted to accept bettors residing within DC’s state lines.

Are Online Casinos Legal in DC and Can You Play Casino Games Online?

Although no laws exist to legalize online casinos, no laws exist to prohibit them either. It is preferable to play with an online casino operator that’s located outside the state lines of Washington DC. That’s because the District of Columbia does not authorize or license online casinos within its territory and it’s not safe to trust your money and the fairness of casino gaming at an unregulated, unlicensed site.
