More and more states are legalizing sports betting right across the USA. The majority are still yet to do so though, with many sports fans waiting with bated breath to find out when they’ll be able to bet on their favorite sports.
One of these states is Louisiana, though the process for allowing sportsbooks to begin operating is well underway. We’re still likely a few months away from the first wagers being placed in the Pelican State, but we get closer with each passing day.

The first attempt to legalize sports betting in Louisiana was in 2018 when two bills were introduced that would pave the way for a referendum. However, it didn’t get very far through the state legislature. Lawmakers tried again in 2019, though it too died.
In 2020, another bill was introduced and this time, it passed. In November of that year, voters in Louisiana cast ballots in a referendum on making sports betting legal with 55 of the state’s 64 parishes voting in favor.
The referendum wasn’t enough to legalize Louisiana sports betting. Lawmakers in the state still need to pass a couple of additional pieces of legislation. Two bills, one covering licensing and regulation and another covering taxation of sportsbooks will have to be drafted and agreed before any wagers can be placed.
As of April 2021, the necessary bills have begun their journey through the Louisiana legislature.
Currently, the earliest sports betting could begin in Louisiana would be in the fall of 2021, though any number of setbacks could delay that into 2022.
With no laws prescribing how sportsbooks are licensed in Lousiana, we don’t currently know which brands are likely to launch in the state. However, by looking at what’s happened elsewhere in the country, we can take an educated guess.
It’s a pretty safe bet that the US’ two biggest sports betting brands will make it to Lousiana when it’s legal for them to do so.
FanDuel In Louisiana
Elsewhere in the country, FanDuel has been one of the first sportsbooks to open whenever a state legalizes sports betting. It seems likely that we’ll see this happen in Louisana too.
FanDuel has a wide selection of betting markets, competitive odds, and an easy-to-use mobile app. This will mean Lousiana’s sports fans will likely have access to a quality sportsbook.
DraftKings In Louisiana
Like FanDuel, DraftKings is one of America’s leading sportsbooks with a presence in more than a dozen states. The company rose to fame through its daily fantasy sports operations but quickly launched a sportsbook when PASPA was struck down in 2018.
DraftKings also offers a great sports betting experience with a pleasant app, almost every market you could want to bet on, and decent odds.
As it has been in other states, DraftKings will likely be one of the first sportsbooks to launch in Louisiana.
Most sportsbooks have welcome offers and free bets that they offer to bettors to encourage them to sign up to their service over a competitor. When they launch in Louisiana, we expect the same to happen.
Since we expect FanDuel and DraftKings to launch early on, here are the types of offers you can expect to be available.
DraftKings Louisiana Sportsbook Welcome Offer
In most states, new customers that join DraftKings can claim up to $1,000 in risk-free bets. Something similar is likely to be available in the Pelican State.
FanDuel Louisiana Sportsbook Welcome Offer
FanDuel also offers up to $1,000 in risk-free bets to new customers when they sign up in other states. We can, therefore, expect to see something similar in Louisiana.
We’ll know more when the sportsbooks are allowed to begin operating, but we can expect some of the best sports betting apps in Lousiana to be from FanDuel and DraftKings as they already offer great apps elsewhere in the country.
When legal sports betting in Louisiana does begin, you can expect to be able to bet on most major sports, including both domestic and international competitions. This list will likely include:
