Everyone loves a trailblazer, and that’s exactly what the SugarHouse brand is to sports betting.
First established in 2010 as a bricks-and-mortar casino by the Delaware River, an online presence followed duly after. And, then, in August 2018, they became the first online casino in the US to offer sports betting via their website.
The fully integrated sportsbook and casino platform is powered by Kambi, the software provider of choice for many betting concerns in the US and globally (including 888 Sport and DraftKings), and so players will feel right at home.
Not long after launching, SugarHouse decided to end their association with the Golden Nugget Casino, and instead set up a link with Monmouth Park. It was a move designed to allow the brand to offer NBA betting, with regulations preventing the Golden Nugget – owned by the Houston Rockets’ Tilman Fertitta – from offering or taking wagers on the sport. It’s a commitment which shows that SugarHouse is deadly serious about its sportsbook project, and today they welcome wagers on basketball and all of the other key sports in the portfolio.
One of the most appealing things about SugarHouse is that bettors are able to take advantage of not one but two loyalty programs.
Every wager you place will earn both Loyalty Level and Bonus Store points, with each reward scheme feeding into the other. Enhance your Loyalty Level to unlock even greater prizes in the Bonus Store, from free bets to sports tickets, luxury accommodation and more.
Being rewarded just for doing something you love is as satisfying as it sounds.
As for the sportsbook itself, the hook-up with Kambi means that SugarHouse players can take advantage of the Cash Out feature, which is not available to all US bettors.
As an event unfolds, you may be offered a settlement amount to ‘cash out’ your wager; this can be a great way to confirm a profit on your bet, or cut your losses and walk away with some kind of payback.
Cash Out takes some of the power away from the house, and that is excellent news for the humble bettor.
Finally, the Jackpot Parlay option is worthy of a mention. Here, SugarHouse have curated a betslip featuring a variety of sports that pays out an eye-swivelling sum, which is great news if you’re betting in a hurry.
The betslip can be modified too, allowing you to wager on individual sports and in any given timeframe, as well as altering your stake amount as you please. You can even hit the ‘re-spin’ button if you’re not happy with the auto-pick selections.
One of SugarHouse's express aims is to make sports betting easier for people that have never had a wager before, and that mission is powered by their simple-to-use desktop site. Admittedly, the website can look a bit chaotic and busy at first glance but, once you have become accustomed to its charms, it is a breeze to navigate.
As ever, the key action unfolds down the left-hand side of the screen: this is where all of the sports and major events are listed. You can also hit the giant yellow ‘Live Right Now’ button, which acts as a portal to the site’s in-play betting options. Sporting events around the globe are taking place every hour of the day, and you can wager upon them courtesy of SugarHouse. Also in that left column, you will find links to the Jackpot Parlay and ‘My Betting History’ sections.
The middle part of the screen is given over to all of the key sporting action; either available live bets, if you’re on the homepage, or any upcoming slate of fixtures if you have clicked on a specific sport.
It’s a simple set-up but one that rewards the player by making it a cinch to find your selections and place them with ease.
To avoid the mobile app becoming overcrowded on smaller screens, SugarHouse have cleverly placed all of the key wayfinders behind a subtle menu button in the top left-hand corner of the app.
Give that a tap and the same menu you see outlined on the desktop site becomes available, allowing you to switch between sports and place your single bets and multi-sports parlays.
One of the bugbears is that you will have to manually switch between money line, spread and total points selections, rather than all of them being displayed at once. That’s a minor bugbear that will, presumably, only frustrate those that are completely new to the product.
Otherwise, the mobile app is nicely streamlined and loads up new pages in rapid fashion; is there anything worse than a buggy app that buffers when loading new screens?

We’ve covered many of SugarHouse's special features in the ‘What We Love…’ section, with the Cash Out and Jackpot Parlay options – while not unique to this specific brand – only available at the select few sportsbooks who have Kambi onboard as a partner.
And we certainly can’t think of many sportsbooks in the US, if any, that allow their players to accrue two different sets of loyalty points.
