NL & AL MVP Odds: Bettors & Oddsmakers At Odds Over Winners

The season hasn’t even begun, but bettors have some hot takes already. No take is hotter than the bettors’ favorite to win the AL MVP. Meanwhile, the National League is a two-horse race.

AL MVP Odds & Betting Data

Out of nowhere, 40% of total bets placed on the American League MVP winner for the 2021 season have been placed on Adalberto Mondesi. The Royals shortstop has never been an All-Star, has never received MVP votes before, and he’s never been worth even 3 fWAR over a single season. That hasn’t stopped bettors from placing bets on the incredible long shot, +8000 odds.

Maybe bettors fell in love after Mondesi’s 2020 season. Playing in 59 of the 60 games, Mondesi slashed .256/.294/.416 and stole 24 bases. His offensive output was well below average for a shortstop, but he did hit for more power than 2019 and he continued to show off his elite speed.

Behind Mondesi. Aaron Judge, Bo Bichette, and Mike Trout all have 20% of the bets placed on them. Trout is the oddsmakers’ favorite at +230. Judge is the third favorite at +1200. Bichette is another strange one, as oddsmakers place him as the 14th favorite at +4000.

NL MVP Odds & Betting Data

The National League MVP bets are much easier to wrap your head around. Bettors’ currently only have bets placed on either Juan Soto or Mookie Betts. The two are tied currently tied as the oddsmakers’ favorite to win the award, along with Cody Bellinger at +850.

Mookie Betts is the bettors favorite with 66.67% of bets placed on him. Betts finished second in NL MVP betting in 2020 and previously won the AL MVP in 2018. Betts has finished in the top-5 of MVP betting in either the AL or NL from 2016-2020. He seems a safe bet to at least be in consideration at the end of the season.

Bettors have placed 33.33% of bets on Juan Soto. The Washington Nationals star has never won an MVP award before. However, he has finished top-10 in each of the last two seasons. He also led the NL in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging, and OPS in 2020. It makes sense that bettors would throw their support behind the young star.
