World Series Odds: MLB Trade Deadline Winners and Losers

The MLB trade deadline has come and gone, and it was one of the craziest in recent memory. Buyers were shipping out top prospects, sellers were moving elite names. It felt like anybody and everybody was making moves to seriously improve their team. Of course, not every contender improved in the eyes of oddsmakers. So, Oddschecker is here to show how the odds moved, and what teams benefited the most and least.

MLB Trade Deadline Winners

Los Angeles Dodgers

World Series Odds Before Trade Deadline: +475

World Series Odds After Trade Deadline: +390

The Dodgers saw their World Series odds move from +475 pre-deadline to +390 after. That’s an implied chance change from 17.4% to 20.4%. They not only remain the odds-on favorite to win the World series, but they bolstered their odds considerably. They have without a doubt solidified themselves as the favorites to win it all.

San Francisco Giants

World Series Odds Before Trade Deadline: +1400

World Series Odds After Trade Deadline: +1200

The Giants were often on the outside looking in on the favorites to win the World Series. Prior to the deadline they had creeped up to 9th on the market with +1400 odds. Now with the addition of Kris Bryant, they move to +1200. That’s an implied chance change from 6.7% to 7.7%. More importantly, it now moves them into 6th on the market. They’re a clear deadline winner.

New York Yankees

World Series Odds Before Trade Deadline: +3000

World Series Odds After Trade Deadline: +2200

No team saw more odds movement in their favor this deadline then the Yankees. Prior to making a move the Yankees were sitting +3000, outside the top-10 in the World Series market. Now, they sit at +2200, 10th on the market. That’s the single largest odds improvement any team made at the deadline. There’s no more clear indication of a winner than that.

MLB Trade Deadline Losers

Tampa Bay Rays

World Series Odds Before Trade Deadline: +1400

World Series Odds After Trade Deadline: +1600

The Rays had a confusing deadline. They added a premium bat in Nelson Cruz, but traded away a solid starter in Rich Hill. They didn’t make any other big moves. With most other contenders making big moves to add, oddsmakers just didn’t see the Rays keeping up. Prior to the deadline the Rays were given +1400 odds, those have since shrunk to +1600. That moves them from 8th on the market to 9th.

San Diego Padres

World Series Odds Before Trade Deadline: +900

World Series Odds After Trade Deadline: +1100

The Padres added an All-Star 2B, and immediately oddsmakers were against the move. They saw their odds drop from +900 to +1100. That never changed, as the Padres weren’t able to lock down any other significant moves. Once a clear 4th favorite to win the World Series, the Padres have now been caught by the New York Mets and now share the position.

Oakland A’s

World Series Odds Before Trade Deadline: +2500

World Series Odds After Trade Deadline: +3100

The A’s odds drop is not for a lack of trying. They added Starling Marte, Josh Harrison, and Yan Gomes to their lineup. They also added a premium reliver in Andrew Chafin to their bullpen. For most that would see like a great deadline. Oddsmakers don’t see it that way. Instead, the A’s have seen their odds drop from +2500 to +3100. They’ve crashed out of the top-10 on the market and now sit 12th.
