Now the Dodgers are quite the heavy favorites by MLB playoff standards at -144 odds, or an implied 59% chance to win their series with the Giants. Only the Tampa Bay Rays have better odds of winning their series. Meanwhile, the Giants are given +122 odds, or an implied 45% chance to win the series. Only the Red Sox are given worse odds.
Still, the most surprising thing is that oddsmakers only think the series lasts four games. The Dodgers are given +290 odds to win in four games. After that, the Dodgers and Giants are given equal +380 odds to win the series in five games. Then oddsmakers say the Giants in four and the Dodgers in three have the same +490 odds. Oddsmakers couldn’t be clearer. They don’t see any single scenario that favors the Giants.
The Giants won a major league-best 107 games this year. They won their season series with the Dodgers. What more do they have to do to prove they should be taken seriously? The simple answer is they need to beat the Dodgers in the playoffs.
There are many parallels between this series and the Lakers vs. Suns in the NBA this past year. The biggest is that just because one team has more established talent doesn’t necessarily make them better. We’ll see if the Giants can make the same statement that the Suns made earlier this year.
